The Maverick Returns: McCain Talks Out Both Sides of His Mouth!

August 15th, 2008 | by admin |

I really don’t want to write this article. I really wish I was at peace supporting John McCain. Unfortunately, “The Maverick” is talking out both sides of his mouth again. This time it’s about abortion!

Wait a minute… Who questioned whether McCain was 100% committed to the pro-life cause way back in February on national television?! That would be yours truly. I’m sorry to say that question remains.

Politico.com is reporting the following comments from a recent McCain interview with the Weekly Standard:

McCain said “the pro-life position is one of the important aspects or fundamentals of the Republican Party.”

“And I also feel that — and I’m not trying to equivocate here — that Americans want us to work together. You know, Tom Ridge is one of the great leaders and he happens to be pro-choice. And I don’t think that that would necessarily rule Tom Ridge out [for vice-president].”

He added: “I think it’s a fundamental tenet of our party to be pro-life, but that does not mean we exclude people from our party that are pro-choice. We just have a — albeit strong — but just it’s a disagreement. And I think Ridge is a great example of that.

What?! Is John McCain out of his mind? Conservatives have always been on edge about supporting his candidacy and now he says something like this? Regardless of the fact that this line of thinking doesn’t make any sense logically (being pro-life is fundamental to being Republican but you don’t have to be pro-life to be Republican) what’s even more baffling is why McCain would state this opinion out loud, even if he does believe it!

What good is it going to do his campaign? Does he really think it’s going to attract swing voters? The truth is this: the right to life issue is probably the single most polarizing issue out there. Most people have a strong opinion on it one way or the other. So McCain is not going to win over pro-choice people because they don’t believe he’s really pro-choice. Instead all McCain has done is further upset pro-life people who he desperately needs because most of them are all Republicans! You don’t tick off the base just before the convention and the final campaign blitz to November. It just doesn’t make any sense.

Here’s a quick question for you: How many Obama bumper stickers have you seen? I don’t know about you, but I’ve seen a ton. How many McCain bumper stickers have you seen? It’s a pretty rare occasion isn’t it? I think it’s clear that the conservative base needs to be energized for John McCain and moves like this won’t help this one bit. Let’s pray to God that McCain doesn’t pick Lieberman, Crist, or Ridge for VP.

McCain says, “that does not mean we exclude people from our party that are pro-choice.” There’s a huge difference between not excluding someone and making him the vice-presidential candidate!
