More troubling news… John McCain brags about supporting Ginsburg?!

June 17th, 2008 | by admin |

What is a social conservative to do this November? The McCain conundrum that will be faced by millions of conservative Evangelicals, Catholics, and Jews this November has no solution in sight.

If you’re pro-life, pro-traditional marriage, pro-family values, and anti-judicial activism it appears you don’t have a presidential candidate to vote for this fall. At least not one you can feel safe about.

John McCain has displayed lukewarm positions on many of the important moral issues facing our country which has left many social conservatives with a sick feeling in their stomach. For an example of what I’m talking about just read this recent blurb from Politico.com

McCain meets with Hillary backers at HQ

Ben Smith has good detail on a post-conference call powwow between McCain and some Hillary backers yesterday:

“He stayed for a good almost half hour afterwards shaking hands, listening to our concerns, talking to us,” said PUMA founder Will Bower, who said he thought many of the people there would vote for McCain.

Former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina stayed to mingle with the crowd, whose members also included Clinton backer Harriet Christian, made momentarily famous on YouTube for getting ejected from the Rules & Bylaws press area.

Bower said he’d liked McCain’s answer on judges, in which he “pointed out that he supported Bill Clinton with both Ginsberg and Breyer.”

Another person who was present, but asked not to be named to avoid conflict with fellow Democrats, said he’d pressed a McCain staffer on McCain’s position on same-sex marriage.

The staffer “said it was the same as [John] Kerry’s position,” he said.

If this report is true, John McCain is in for some real trouble. This will not escape the attention of the conservative base of the GOP which will hurt his chances in November. Many conservative voters may exercise their right to abstain from voting for a presidential candidate.*

If John McCain wants these votes, he needs to address this report and either deny it or apologize for it. This is serious business at this point. McCain risks alienating the base of the political party he is currently identifying himself with. Is the McCain campaign listening??

*In case you’re wondering why I don’t plug the libertarian candidate, Bob Barr, it’s because he does not line up with the values of social conservatives either. Like so many libertarians, some of his policies about smaller government are dead on. Others are just plain wacky.

Libertarians, for instance, advocate legalizing marijuana and prostitution, they stand against preemptive military strikes to prevent terrorism, and fail to recognize the need for a federal marriage amendment to protect the institution of marriage from radical activism which circumvents the will of the people. There are other examples of where they break from conservative principles, those are just the ones that come to mind.
