John McCain on Ellen: He’s Against Gay Marriage, but He Believes in Legal Protection for the Behavior
May 22nd, 2008 | by admin |John McCain made an appearance on the Ellen DeGeneres Show and talked about gay marriage. The video will probably be up on YouTube in the near future. Right now it’s on the main page at Ellen’s website. If you get a chance to view it, check it out and let me know what you think. I’ll gladly tell you what I think.
Already, the media and liberal blogs are ripping McCain for telling Ellen that “she can’t get married.” John McCain was actually quite cordial to Ms. DeGeneres as he explained his lukewarm position on gay marriage.
Yes, John McCain is against “gay marriage” but in the video he explains that he’s perfectly fine with civil unions, or a legal title that provides for the same benefits as marriage. He’s just against calling it “marriage” in title. That is simply unacceptable Senator McCain!
I think I speak for a majority of conservatives who believe that this is simply a poor precedent to set both morally and entitlement wise. I have written in great length as to why I believe homosexual behavior should not be a protected class.
Most Americans believe that homosexuality is a behavior and if we start handing out entitlements for behavior the slope becomes very slippery. Furthermore, a majority of conservative traditional Americans believe that homosexuality is not only a behavior, but a morally deviant behavior. Why should we have to accept a behavior we find repugnant and indecent? It simply doesn’t make any sense.
When John McCain straddles the fence on an issue like this it only hurts conservatives and blurs the line between right and wrong. I wrote several days ago that John McCain had an opportunity (in the wake of the judicial activism by the California Supreme Court) to speak up and show his quality. If this is all Senator McCain has to show, he has failed conservatives yet again.
