A Chance for John McCain to Show His Quality…
May 16th, 2008 | by admin |Now that judicial activism in California has brought the issue of gay marriage back into the national spotlight, the presidential candidates have weighed in with their thoughts…
The Obama campaign released a statement which only further confirms what we already know about him, he’s not opposed to gay marriage and believes that homosexual behavior should be rewarded and seen as a special class.
“Barack Obama has always believed that same-sex couples should enjoy equal rights under the law, and he will continue to fight for civil unions as President. He respects the decision of the California Supreme Court, and continues to believe that states should make their own decisions when it comes to the issue of marriage.”
So what about John McCain? He has repeatedly come out against an amendment to the United States Constitution to define marriage as between one man and one woman. His excuse for this has been that states should be allowed to make these decisions. He has also mentioned that if he felt it is becoming a problem he would then consider a constitutional amendment. I’d say it’s a problem Senator McCain! Will McCain seize this opportunity to sure up some of the conservative vote by taking a stand on this issue? It hasn’t happened yet.
“John McCain supports the right of the people of California to recognize marriage as a unique institution sanctioning the union between a man and a woman, just as he did in his home state of Arizona. John McCain doesn’t believe judges should be making these decisions.”
McCain condemns judicial activism, and says he respects the will of the people. This is a good thing, but he doesn’t go far enough for most social conservatives who would like to see him reconsider his negative stance on a federal marriage amendment. I hope someone on McCain’s staff is reading this, because it’s a golden opportunity for John McCain to show his quality.
