The Golden Compass: It’s not what you think.
December 4th, 2007 | by admin |It’s not what you think. You might think it looks like a Lord of the Rings knockoff or even a Harry Potter look-a-like. From all accounts I’ve heard it’s nothing of the sort. In fact it’s based on a book trilogy which is apparently very blatantly anti-family, anti-God, and anti-Christianity.
I haven’t read the books but I’m going on the authority of multiple sources who say that this is much different than even the so called “controversy” surrounding the Harry Potter books.
You might recall that controversy that started several years ago surrounding the books about witches and magic. Well this goes beyond silly magic spells and overtly attacks religion, deals with demonic spiritual guides, and in fact in the final book of the series they kill God.
Now will all of this be present in the movie? No way, I’m sure it’s cleaned up and made family friendly, but it’s all a ploy to get kids to read the books which are apparently quite nasty.
The trilogy the movie is based on is called “His Dark Materials” by Phillip Pullman. When I read this quote attributed to the author I knew right then and there that I wanted nothing to do with this movie or the books. (Not only will the movie encourage kids to read the books, but it will be giving money to this scum bag.) Here’s what he had to say about C.S. Lewis and some of the most beloved classic children’s books of all time:
“I loathe the ‘Narnia’ books,” Pullman has said in previous press interviews. “I hate them with a deep and bitter passion, with their view of childhood as a golden age from which sexuality and adulthood are a falling away.” He has called the series “one of the most ugly and poisonous things” he’s ever read.
Sounds like a red flag to me! My advice: Boycott The Golden Compass.

Here is proof of what you are saying. The movie will be cleaned up a bit:
Weitz says, “We’re not dealing as directly as the books with a parallel-Earth version of the Catholic Church, which some fans probably see as a massive wimp-out, but I see that as actually a broadening of what the film is about. I had a bunch of conversations with Pullman about this — as far as he’s concerned, it really is a statement against dogmatic authority of any kind. I think people who appreciate these issues in the book won’t be disappointed with the film. I honestly do.”
If you read the whole article, you will get an even better picture of Pullman’s beliefs:

Is your faith so weak that watching a movie written by an atheist? I would think reading the books and/or watching the movie would be a good learning tool to strengthen someone’s faith.

Anonymous: Is your credibility so weak that you can’t sign your name? Oh wait, you already answered that.
Actually, my post refers to two reasons why I won’t go see this movie, none of which have anything to do with my “weak faith” and being scared of a movie written by an atheist. (I’m sure I’ve seen dozens of movies written by atheists!)
If you take the time to READ my post you’ll note that I think this movie is an attempt to go after CHILDREN not adults. The books themselves are very anti-God and anti-traditional values and therefore I would hate to see kids tricked into reading them and parents unknowingly encouraging it not knowing what kind material their young minds will be delving into.
Second, I simply won’t go financially support this because the author has made some awful comments about an author and philosopher I respect very much, C.S. Lewis.
Afraid? Not quite. Appalled? Bingo.

one the movie is not about the chruch and you are just closed mind if you think that it is not right to go after this one movie after so many others ones that have been against the chruch. Also the one movie about christ is not attacked, but just this one about kids doing some thing thats for them not the chruch. so if you have a problem with it them keep it to your self. For one thing we none believers out there are just what we are and you have to get over it. we don’t attack you we write and we have meetings , so you should go do that insted of getting all up in our faces. people have a right to think what they want and you do to but you have no right to tell people that some thing is wrong just because you think it is. ok so keep it to your self and the community of fellow believers just like we do. also you just have to deal with differnt people in your life and they may not always think like you do and attacking them like that is not right. I am athesit and proud of it and you can be proud of being what ever you want so don’t go after the ones that are different then you. If you don’t like what I have said then you should not have read this. I am not sorry if you thing reading this was a waste of you time. I have an opition and it needed to be heared.
