Michael Vick kills dogs, pittbulls attack woman, meanwhile other athletes get off the hook…

Michael Vick and the poor little puppies has been everywhere in the news media and sports media the last two weeks. To be fair, what Mr. Vick did was stupid, and cruel. However, I’m becoming more and more convinced that we as a society have our priorities out of whack. Here we rake this guy over the coals, while we let other celebrities and athletes off the hook when they put other human beings in danger. Domestic violence, assault, driving under the influence, promoting and indulging in the drug culture, encouraging sexual deviance by their behavior, it’s all too common among those held in celebrity status in the United States. Why aren’t these folks in as much hot water as Michael Vick? But, Andy what about the poor little puppies? Don’t you care about the little doggies? Read this article and see if you still are shedding a tear for pittbulls:

GIG HARBOR, Wash. (AP) - Two pit bull terriers broke into a house through a pet door Tuesday and attacked a woman in her bed, mauling her badly, a Pierce County sheriff’s spokesman said. The woman was able to grab a gun and try to shoot the dogs, then break away from the attack and lock herself in her car, where she called 911, sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said. The woman, who was not immediately identified, was taken to a hospital in Tacoma, where she was listed in serious condition.

Officers planned to talk to the dogs’ owner. The pit bulls also killed a neighbor’s Jack Russell terrier, which entered the house during the attack, Troyer said.

I’m not excusing inhumane behavior involving torture and abuse. Michael Vick is an idiot. But, so are those who hold what he has done as a greater tragedy than what others in pro sports have done. Let me remind you of a few that have happened in recent years:

-Professional Wrestler Chris Benoit kills his family and himself.

-NFL Star Leonard Little kills a woman while driving drunk, and he’s a repeat offender.

-Here’s a list of athletes caught driving under the influence and threatening the lives of other human beings.

-Former NFL wide receiver Rae Carruth was convicted of conspiring to murder his pregnant girlfriend.

-NFL Star Ray Lewis had a questionable role in a murder.

-MLB Pitcher Pedro Astacio punches his wife in the face.

There are many others I could link to, but I’ll save you that and just sum up my argument.

My point is this: What has happened with Michael Vick is notable because of his status and because it was a cruel thing that he did, but it is NOT the worst thing that has ever been done by a professional athlete. In fact, I don’t think it even comes close. Should Vick go to jail? Yup. Should a whole lot of other athletes not only be punished, but suffer the same scrutiny by the media? Absolutely. It’s about time we held everyone in professional sports, and all celebrities, by the same standard. If you don’t want to be a role model, and behave in a halfway decent manner then get out of the entertainment business. It’s that simple.

I guess I missed it. Who said that Michael Vick’s crime was “a greater tragedy than what others in pro sports have done”? I think that Carruth and Lewis were both widely condemned for their involvement in criminal activity. I don’t think we can do anything about Chris Benoit, unless you want to put his corpse in jail. And I’m having trouble mustering up a sufficient amount of outrage about a Rockies pitcher who punched his wife 8 years ago or an unnamed miniature golfer in Racine, who drove under the influence.
