Dumb conservatives don’t read as much as their liberal counterparts!
August 22nd, 2007 | by admin |Conservatives don’t read as many books as Liberals, therefore they are obviously less intelligent and capable of thought.
That’s the kind of stupidity and childlike insinuations that have been made by the president of the American Association of Publishers in reaction to a very silly AP poll.
“The Karl Roves of the world have built a generation that just wants a couple slogans: ‘No, don’t raise my taxes, no new taxes,’” Pat Schroeder, president of the American Association of Publishers, said in a recent interview. “It’s pretty hard to write a book saying, ‘No new taxes, no new taxes, no new taxes’ on every page.”
This is utter nonsense. Liberals use slogans and buzz-words just as much as Conservatives. Pro-choice, the climate change crisis, unwanted children, gender identity are a few that I’m just rattling off the top of my head! Not only do both sides of the aisle use buzz words and slogans, but they both do so because they stand are easy to rally around. There is nothing inherently wrong with rallying around a slogan. By the way, this has nothing to do with this stupid AP poll on who reads more books. Let’s get to that poll:
The AP-Ipsos poll found 22 percent of liberals and moderates said they had not read a book within the past year, compared with 34 percent of conservatives.
Obviously, conservatives are inferior. The mental capacity of a conservative is vastly different than that of the book reading liberal. I can’t believe I’m even wasting time responding to this drivel. This is just a dumb poll done by some political hacks. The thing about polls is this. To get the results you want, all you have to do is tweak the factors here and there. All you have to do is mess with the formula a bit, take a sample in this region of the country rather than that region of the country.
Most of all polls lop people into one pile. A conservative is a conservative is a conservative. There are fiscal conservatives, there are social conservatives, there are moderate conservatives, and there are right-wing evangelical conservatives. Look, I get in the habit of referring to liberals as all one and the same. It’s much easier with liberals though because they are so intolerant of other thought. Just look at the presidential candidates, they get all kinds of flack if they aren’t drinking the same kool-aid and all on the same radical agenda. Conservatism like Christianity is a philosophy of freedom. Not so with liberalism, socialism, and communism.
See now I’ve gone off on a tangent! Shame on me. Let’s get back to this poll.
Among those who had read at least one book, liberals typically read nine books in the year, with half reading more than that and half less. Conservatives typically read eight, moderates five.
So we’re talking about the difference of one book read between conservatives and liberals. So what? Maybe conservatives read more magazines, newspapers, or online articles. Maybe conservatives spend more time working (unlike some libs, we do have jobs!) Maybe it’s more time spent with families or at church. Who knows what the real story is behind this. I just can’t believe that a poll like this would make national headlines and furthermore that it would be used to spread the insinuation that conservatives are obviously less informed. Don’t kid yourself, that’s exactly the intent of this.
Look, I’d love to pontificate some more, but I’ve got to go read a book! Obviously I have some catching up to do with my mentally superior liberal counterparts.

I agree that this is a non-story, but you probably shouldn’t attact the scientific validity of the poll unless you have some evidence for doing so. Making wild accusations merely reinforces the idea that conservatives are uneducated and anti-intellectual.

If you haven’t listened to my program in the past, I’ve always had an issue with polls and surveys.
It’s true that there are some polls done appropriately and without biased intent, but there are others that I believe have an agenda behind them.
This is just such a poll in my humble opinion. The problem is it really is an inexact science to begin with, even pollsters will give you that. Then when you get an organization taking polls that has a slant or agenda it’s very hard not to believe that they wouldn’t tweak certain factors to get certain results.
Call me a conspiracy theorist if you like. I’m just curious what checks and balances are in place to make certain that this isn’t happening?
Much like mainstream news media that claims to be independent I’m not sure any reporting can truly be done without some degree of bias and influence.

So, are you suggesting that the Associated Press has something to gain by making people believe that Democrats are more intelligent than Republicans and that they are intentionally skewing their polling data to make that happen?
By Andy Barnett on Aug 25, 2007
No, I’m not suggesting they have anything to gain by being overtly biased. It’s just a bi-product of the type of people who generally work in news rooms around the country.
By and large, you find liberals gravitating toward the news room because they feel they need to watch out for people who can’t think for themselves.
